Johnstown, CO - Dream the impossible dream with the heart-rending story and soaring score of Man of La Mancha. Based on The Adventures of Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes, Man of La Mancha tells of Don Quixote, an elderly knight who sets out into a bleak and unbearable world to defeat his fantasies of heathens, wizards and serpents of sin, while his friends desperately attempt to bring him back to reality. This tragi-comedic saga of a man determined to march into hell for a heavenly cause delivers laughter, tears, and some of the finest music ever written for the musical theatre.
Man of La Mancha premiered on Broadway in 1965, starring Richard Kiley as Miguel Cervantes and his creation Don Quixote. Man of La Mancha is actually a play within a play, as the imprisoned Cervantes tells the story of the noble but delusional knight to his fellow prisoners while waiting to be summoned by the Spanish Inquisition. Written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, the original production of Man of La Mancha won five Tony® Awards, including Best Musical.
Brian Stokes Mitchell starred as Cervantes/Don Quixote when Man of La Mancha was revived on Broadway in 2002. The new production received great acclaim proving that the play, with its classic and heart-breaking songs such as “The Impossible Dream,” “I, Don Quixote,” and “Dulcinea” had not lost their emotional impact and power to move audiences.
Candlelight’s production of Man of La Mancha is directed by Scott Beyette, who has spent the last 20 years at Boulder’s Dinner Theatre where he helmed dozens of shows including Peter Pan, Singing in the Rain and The Sound of Music among others. Scott has also won numerous awards for his direction. Bob Hoppe brings his choreography talents to the show.
Don Quixote will be played by Candlelight veteran David L. Wygant, most recently seen as Cogsworth in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and General Howell in Kiss Me Kate. Wygant’s other memorable roles at Candlelight are Julian Marsh in 42nd Street, Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Fezzywig in Christmas Carol. Playing opposite Wygant as Dulcinea will be Heather McClain, currently staring as Lilli/Katherine in Kiss Me Kate at the Candlelight; Ethan Lee Knowles as Sancho, Don Quixote’s befuddled but loyal squire; George Lemmon as Pedro and Thomas Castro as Quixote’s friend Duke Carrasco. Annie Dwyer, who has been seen in many Candlelight shows, returns to play the Housekeeper.
